2011 Car shows - Kool April Nites

Are you a Classic Car buff? If so, then I bet you’re a fan of car shows. There’s nothing like spending a warm summer afternoon checking out everyone’s pride and joy. Knowing the thousands (10s of thousands) of dollars spent restoring this piece of history is but a drop in a bucket compared to the time and effort and love that went into its rebirth. And now standing in the middle of hundreds of these cars you get to relive a bit of yours, your fathers, or even your grandfathers childhood. One of the car shows I’ve been attending since I was a child is the Kool April Nites car show in Redding (YES, that is how they spell it!). This annual event held each April (who would guess?), is more than just a car show, it’s a weeklong event. Starting with Tuesday the 12th, “show and shines” are held throughout Redding California, while each may have dozens of cars, these are just a few of the cars whose owners come early to help prime the event. The Cruise
The real event starts on Friday evening (April 15th this year). Around 6:30 in the evening the roads around the middle of Redding get blocked off and only the registered contestants are allowed on the road in a couple mile long circle of blocks providing the annual Cruise. Hundreds of cars pack the streets as thousands of people sit in the grass with lawn chairs and blankets watching them go by. Food vendors walk the streets and the smell of tailgate barbeques fills the air. 50s Dance
Following the cruise is a 50’s dance with live music in a huge tent by the Civic auditorium in Redding. Many people dress up and young and old have a great time dancing to the music of the bygone era. Main Car Show Day
The following day (Saturday April 16th) is the main show. Parked on the lawn of the Civic Auditorium are up to 1500 Classic, Modified and vintage cars to look through. Inside the auditorium you will find the “Trailer Queens”, some of the more awesome examples of car restoration. A second dance is held Saturday night. Awards Day
Sunday is the wrap-up with the awards. Usually by around noon to 2pm the owners are starting to pack up, so the roads leaving the auditorium provide one last look at the cars as they start to file out of town to the next show or to a well deserved rest in a cover garage. Next time you head out to one of these shows don’t forget grandpa, if you don’t have one available close by, find one to take! The show comes to life as he describes his experiences back when these were the latest, top of the line, designs in the automotive industry!

I like the way you think. Car shows are a lot of fun and you can meet the greatest people. I just came back from a Laughlin Nevada where I attended the SSR Laughlin River Run. There were 104 SSR's and it lasted 3 days. Did you have a car in the show?

We just started up our Nevada site Nevada Car Shows. Doesn't look like we got that one listed yet. It takes a while to get all the car show organizers used to sending us info and pictures each year.
