Choosing a surveillance system

By Dwayne Goerges

There are many reasons why you might need a video surveillance system both for home and business. Camera systems are commonly used for security as well as just for convenience. Choosing a system that fits your need at a reasonable price is often difficult.

Walking down the isle of stores like Costco and Sam club, you often see complete systems at what would seem a reasonable price. For one price you often get up to 4 cameras along with a multiplexing monitor that can view all four cameras at one. What more could you need right? While these systems might fit your needs, all to often you get them set up and find that the area you want to view is too small in the screen, too dark, out of focus. That’s where professional help comes in handy, and often at a price very comparable to the one size fits all systems.

Professionals have a huge variety of equipment to choose from and will tailor the system to work the environment it is needed. Some of the specialized camera equipment is capable of taking good quality video in low and even star light situations. If you have an even lower light application to meet, additional components can be added like infrared illuminators. These illuminators put out a color of light that is below what humans can see but well within the range of video cameras. Star light cameras are capable of a good quality picture without any assistance by only, you guessed it “Star Light”.

Recording equipment has also changed over recent years. At one time your only choice was videotape. Now the preferred method is digital. Digital records can be stored on DVR units that are specifically made for digital storage, or on any computer with the proper video input card. Special software is used to allow you to view the video in real time and multiplex your monitor so that you can view multiple cameras at one time as well as switch between cameras. These systems even incorporate motion-sensing technology so that the unit will only record several seconds before and after it senses movement, saving on recording space.

Using an IP connection you can view your cameras from any where in the world. Allowing you to see what’s happening at home while you’re on vacation. Another good application for this technology is for conference calling.

Often what you want to view is a distance away. Fixed, zoom and telescopic lenses fill the need when you need to zoom in on an area too far away for a standard camera lens.

While you may not need all these features, before you buy a system it is a good idea to investigate the possibilities. You may find that you can get a custom system that fits your exact needs for around the same price as the one size fits all systems
