DoFollow Blogs
By Dwayne Goerges
What is a DoFollow blog? A DoFollow blog is a blog that allows "link Love" to pass to the linked site. A while back Google decided that sites should add a attribute to most links to tell Google not to follow the link. They encouraged people to add it to their blogs with the idea that this would discourage spammers from spamming. Either the Google programmers were very naive or they had other reasons for asking this. I don't believe they were that naive. As expected spammers continue spamming for much the same reason that email spammers keep sending out spam. They both know if you put it out to a large enough number of people some would click on it. Making your blog a DoFollow blog encourages people to comment on your blog. Paying them back in a way, for spending the time to leave comments. Comments add content to your site and more importantly makes you site feel more interactive which encourages more readers. WordPress one of the most popular blog softwares, adds the NoFollow Attribute by default, but adding a simple plugin fixes this problem. So, How do you stop spam? There are many spam stopper plugins that can be easily applied and only take a few minutes. These take almost all the work out of ridding yourself of spam. Unlike the NoFollow attribute, that does nothing to remove a spammy comment from your site. Spam blocking plugins do a remarkable job of identifying spam and blocking it so you don't have to. One way or another, if you haven't looked into the many, many plugins available for your wordpress blog you owe it to yourself to. There are some cool enhancements that you can add to your blog with very little effort. all just a Google search away. 2011 Update to this intel While at one time I did recommend blogs be dofollow and I do still believe the same in regards to the reasons I made that recommendation. As the years have passed it has become more and more difficult to protect your site if you allow dofollow. Or at least more time consuming. Keeping a blog dofollow means that you will need to check each link of each comment and make a decision as to whether you are willing to risk the reputation of your site (in the eyes of the search engines) by linking to the commenter's site with the dofollow (effectively casting a vote in their direction). This is pretty tough when you get the comment. but what about later? Turnover rates for site are very high. What was once a good site can be bought an turned into a "bad Neighborhood" site over night. Linking to a few of those could quickly start decreasing your ranking in the search engines. I am now very protective as to what sites I link to with out the nofollow attribute on the link. You should be too! |
