Kauai - The Garden Isle

By Dwayne Goerges

Everyone has their favorite! Part of what makes Hawaii such a great place to vacation is the variety you find on the different islands. Each Hawaiian island has its own flavor and its own reasons that make it special. My favorite? The Garden Island of Kauai!

While Kauai does have some pretty good shopping like the island of Hawaii (the big island), and it has some great night life like Oahu (the party Island), it's the lush tropical feel of the Kauai that makes it special. Kauai is the wetter of the islands and even holds the record of having the wettest spot on earth Mt. Wai'ale'ale. That doesn’t mean however that a vacation trip to Kauai is doomed to be rained out. In my visits, I’ve found that a large share of the rain happens at night (sometimes in torrential downpours) and off and on at times during the day, with most of the day sunshine and warm temperatures.

The warm air makes it so that it doesn’t really matter if it is raining while you are in the water snorkeling, surfing or even just relaxing and makes for some refreshing contrast to the sometimes hot sun.

Kauai Waterfalls

There are two advantages to this large amount of rain. First the lush tropical foliage that grows on the mountains and hillsides (and just about everywhere else on the island). Second are the waterfalls. Kauai is an island of waterfalls. We looked forward to the occasional hard daytime rain. They usually only last for a few minutes and are followed by bright clean sunlight. Turn you head to the mountains and everywhere you find waterfall cascading down the mountains. We especially liked the North Shore of Kauai with the incredible views of the NaPali Range. Bright shiny silver streaks weave down the mountain after every rain making for beautiful photo opportunities.

Kauai Weddings

The waterfalls and mountain backdrops of Kauai also make for spectacular wedding pictures and provide unforgettable wedding locations, although a little more planning and a wedding planner that is experienced with the island weather is usually a good idea to make sure your event is a success.

Other Kauai Sights

Heading up past Hanalei to Tunnels Beach you also get to cross over these quaint one way bridges crossing over fields and streams. The North Shore also has the tendency to be a little quieter and with fewer tourists then the southern end of the island as well as most of the other islands in the Hawaiian island chain. For the more adventurous there is even a tent campground on the far north end of the island. As avid backpackers my family plans on doing a camp trip on one of our future visits.

Well, that’s my vote. If you’ve been to Hawaii I’m sure you have your own favorite. And the best part is we’re both right!

If I ever get to Hawaii, I'll put in my vote!

What an interesting and descriptive intel - it took me on a daydream so pleasant, I wish I were married there. Maybe one day we can go for vacation.

Pretty much everything about Hawaii is great. Except the price tag!To me it's one of those "must do" vacations. You have to do it at least once in your life.

Funny, even though I live on a lush tropical island, after reading this I still look forward to going to Kauai. You make it sound so attractive. Were you previously in real estate by any chance?
