Northern California Vacations

By Dwayne Goerges

Vacationing in Northern California
First Northern California is a big place. In most cases what is considered Northern California extends from the San Jose and San Francisco Bay area to the Oregon border. That’s over 500 miles from north to south. The recreational opportunities very greatly from the larger cities like San Francisco, the surfing towns near Santa Cruse, the wine country of the Napa Valley, and the outdoor style recreation of the Upper Northern California area.

For the sake of this article, I’m going to focus on the upper part of Northern California. This includes two main regions.
1) The area around Shasta County. The heart of this area is Redding California. Redding is kind of a hub city where from here you can travel in all four directions and investigate different recreational activates. North to Shasta lake, and Mt. Shasta. East to Lassen National Park. West to the cascade mountains and eventually to Eureka at the coast.
2) The Coastal region with the fishing towns of Eureka and Crescent city, and the Redwood forests.

The Redding area has completely different opportunities depending on the time of year. While fishing at the numerous lakes, streams, and rivers is available year round, most of the boating activities are better scheduled for the summer months.

Shasta Lake is huge and is a great place to rent a houseboat, water-ski, use personal watercraft, swim or just tool around in a boat. Shasta Lake is about 10 miles north of Redding and can be easily accessed from several exits of I-5. In addition to Shasta lake is Whiskeytown Lake. This is a smaller lake than Shasta but is considered to be more attractive lake. In most cases the water stays right up to the tree line.

In the winter Mt. Shasta offers some great Snowboarding and Skiing. Mt. Shasta is about 50 miles North of Redding; So Redding is usually a stopover for people traveling north.

To the east is Lassen National Park, some of the highlights include the various Volcanic attractions in the park as well as some great fishing and a beautiful waterfall near Burney.

When heading west of Redding you first travel through the mining towns of Shasta and then Weaverville. Heading north of Weaverville are some of the best hiking and backpacking trails in the world. Literally hundreds of miles of trails and near 100 small natural lakes. If you’re into backpacking, this is a great place to check out!

Finally, Continuing west you reach the coast. From there you can head south a few miles to Eureka, or north to Crescent City. As you head to Crescent City you will pass through the Redwood forest. There is parking along the high way for you to get out and take a trail into the forest. Everything is huge there. You feel dwarfed by the massive tree, huge cover, ferns grow to a size that they tower over you. Jurassic park and the Star Wars planet of Endor were taped there. It’s bigger in real life!

Northern California is a great place to vacation. The outdoor camping, hiking and photography possibilities are endless. You owe it to yourself to check them out!
