SEO 101 Link Building Strategies
By Dwayne Goerges of www.topwebsitetips.com
If you do any reading on SEO you will find a tremendous amount of information on getting new links. This article isn’t meant to help you find linking opportunities, it’s meant to help you use the opportunities you find to your best advantage, to create a strategy to best use the links. Perhaps you’ve wondered things like: This great site will give me links to my site, the more links I get the better, Right? When should I link to the front page of my site? When would it be better to link to the interior pages of my site? Does the link really need to be on a related site or page? How do I choose the right link text? Another Excellent set of questions. I’m glad you asked! This great site will give me links to my site, the more links I get the better, Right? Probably not, and there are several reasons for this. First Google and the other search engines are looking for links that are not manipulated. They want organic links, links that someone put on their site because they thought the other site was so great that they wanted to tell everyone else about it. Sites like Qondio, Squidoo, Hubpages and others are great sites but they can obviously be manipulated, most of the links to other sites probably come from the actual site owners, and Google knows this. Therefore it would seem reasonable that Google and the others do not count these links quite as strongly. Although with these three sites, there is sufficient spam control that the search engines likely don’t consider them content farms (something that Google is actively trying to remove from its indexing). This fact though helps us to see the wisdom of the age old adage “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket”. Don’t put all your time and energy in one linking source. Try to get links from as many sites as possible so that if one link source starts to get devalued, you continue to have links from other sources. The search engines also appear to only give weight to a limited number of links from any one source. This makes sense; from completely natural sources it is unlikely that you would get more than a few links from a site. If you are getting hundreds of links from a single site this may be telling the search engines that the links are manipulated and therefore should be ignored. When should I link to the front page of my site? A large percentage of the links to your site will likely be to the front page of your site. Many of the links to the front page should be the actual name of the site and variations of the name. This is likely how truly organic links would be and it also strengthens your site with that set of keywords. This will help your site come up with “Site Links”, these are links that show in the search engine results under the main link to your site when someone searches for your site name. This is extremely good for establishing a feel of authority for your site. Front page links should also include link text that relates to information that can be found ON YOUR FRONT PAGE. When linking to your site with other keywords, link to the interior page that best fits the keywords. When would it be better to link to the interior pages of my site? As stated above “When linking to your site with other keywords, link to the interior page that best fits the keywords.” This will help you rank better for those keywords. Make sure the page you link to has sufficient text (350 + words, 500 – 700 are better) and the Title, Meta Description and on page text contains the words you are using to link to the page. Don’t use link text to a page that doesn’t actually contain those words and is not on the topic of the link text you plan on using. If you do you are unlikely to have much success. All of the main pages (hub pages) of your site should have links pointing to them. Does the link really need to be on a related site or page? This greatly helps. In most cases organic links will come from pages where the person it discussing a subject and they link to your site as a reference (or example) for the information they are talking about. Therefore links from related pages look more natural and are more likely to be counted as good links by the search engines. That doesn’t mean that links on pages that are not related have no value, it is just possible that they will have less value (be devalued). Bottom line: When planning out your link strategy consider how people naturally link to other sites. Why do you link to other sites in your site? (If you don’t, you should, but that’s the topic of another intel) Use these thoughts when deciding where to get links from, how many to get, where to link to, and what text to use. Remember that a few well placed links have more value that hundreds of poor link matches. Look for new link opportunities every day and don’t get in a rut, spread the links out as much as you can. Don’t expect this to turn your site into an overnight success, but by following these tips in time you can have a profitable website.

Thanks for the wonderful tips about linking.
Thank you for sharing this information, Dwayne. There are so many websites out there that promote automatic links, that could hurt our website rankings. To the newbie, getting these links looks like an easy way to get the job done. Keep up the good work. Best wishes. Frederick
Great article, as always. Getting links is so hard many people get tempted to buy 'em up, which may work in the short term but carries great risks. Apparently Google rolled out an algorithm aimed at paid links in early February, with mild effect.
