SEO 101 Web Page Tweaking
By Dwayne Goerges of www.topwebsitetips.com
Web Page tweaking, no this has nothing to do with your web page taking drugs. And well, it’s probably not really a 101 or beginner subject. But it is a concept that it is very important for webmasters to understand. It’s all based on the premise that on page SEO does not stop when the page gets published (whether the page is on your own site or on one of the web 2.0 sites like Squidoo doesn’t matter here). So, what is web page tweaking? Web Page Tweaking When you first started doing the research for the page you were about to write hopefully you started with doing some keyword research. Once you had your subject you should have checked to see what words or phrases based on that subject were both commonly searched for, as well as produced decent priced clicks (at least if you were planning to put AdSense on the page). But this was only the beginning, at best the research you were doing was some educated guessing as to what would be the best keywords or key phrases to use. Now what? Well, first you get to wait. Possible start getting a few links to point to the page. It may take a month or two, or you might start getting some results in just a few weeks, but first you need to wait until the search engines start sending you traffic. Now it’s time to start checking the stats. I check both AdSense stats and some sort of analytic stats on the page. While I can get some idea on what I’m getting paid per click from AdSense at this point the real gold mine will come from your analytics stats package. How are people finding your page? Sometimes Google will start sending me traffic for words I hadn’t counted on. If you are already starting to get traffic from these terms, you may have stumbled across a gold mine. First do a Google search and find out where you rank for the term. If you are getting daily traffic and you are on the second page or lower it may be time to do some tweaking to the page. If you are getting traffic and you are low in the search, how much traffic would you get if you are on the first page? Combine that with the thought that Google already thinks you page is doing pretty good and it is a new page means that with a little work you might be able to get some serious traffic. If you are getting a few hits a day, but you are already high on the first page of results, it’s probably not worth doing any page tweaking. Save tweaking for terms that will make a large difference in traffic. So, you’ve found a phrase or keyword that is bringing you traffic but is currently pretty low in the results, now what? Now it’s time to review your page and emphasize the word on your page where appropriate. 1) Try adding the term at least once in the page's Meta Title and Description if you can. 2) Add the term to the page's visible page title. 3) Make sure the phrase or keyword is used several times in the page text and at least once in both the first paragraph of the page and the last paragraph of the page. 4) Add a subheading where appropriate using a H2 tag using the phrase 5) Finally a little offsite work. Try to get at least 2-3 links to your page using the key phrase. More Waiting Now wait. Yep another couple weeks to a couple months. I suggest you find something else to do besides staring at your computer waiting for result to appear. Check the stats again and as they say on the shampoo bottle, wash - rinse - repeat. Keep following this same procedure over and over for each page you want to optimize. By doing this you can turn a mildly producing page into something that really starts to make you money. You’ve already spent the time writing a good piece of content; don’t skimp on making the page reach its full potential. While some Web 2.0 sites don’t give you the stats to be able to tweak the page many do. Using the information you glean for the sites that do offer the capability you will be able to continually improve both your new WebPages and those that you have already published.

This makes a lot of sense. Why keep hammering at a particular keyword if the site does well for something else?
